She received her BFA from SUNY-Purchase College, after which she danced with Colleen Thomas, Bill Young, Gwen Welliver, Steeledance, and the Median Movement. From 2007-2015, she performed with Doug Varone and Dancers, touring and teaching nationally and internationally. Julia has staged Varone’s works on companies and universities throughout the U.S., including assisting with the 2013 remounting of Les Troyens at the Metropolitan Opera. She received her MFA from University of Washington, where she focused on her pedagogical research—developing a kinesthetic, experiential dance history course. While in graduate school, she also performed with the Chamber Dance Company, performing repertory by Martha Graham, Trisha Brown, Doug Elkins, and Zvi Gotheiner, among others. Julia taught extensively at University of Washington during her graduate studies and has additionally served as adjunct professor at Marymount Manhattan College and Barnard College. From 2011-2015, she directed 92nd Street Y’s teen performing company, Harkness Repertory Ensemble. Julia has been a guest artist at Bates Dance Festival and Gibney Dance Center and has led workshops and master classes in the U.S. and abroad. She is thrilled to have found a home continuing her teaching career at The College at Brockport, State University of New York.
